I am proud to say that the pete3d device development (hardware, firmware, mechanics) is finished and that the device is ready to use. As a matter of fact, there are few already out in the field, being used and tested by underwater rugby and underwater hockey players and coaches. The battery life got longer, the case got smaller, the edges got smoother.
From a usability standpoint, it is very intuitive. It can be easily strapped to the earmuff, without bothering the player during the match. The logging starts automatically, as soon as the player starts playing.

As for the Android app: a multitude of features got implemented like user settings, device settings, data analysis, and many more. Check out the screenshots and see for your self. You can find the app on the Play Store.

The next step is to integrate some sort of team analytics. Imagine every player wearing a pete3d during a game. The combined data can say a lot about the game and the players’ performance. This is something I am working on right now and hope to have a working prototype (online app) by the end of the year.
The pete3d project is a part of the UWR-Data group, maintained and led by Wolfgang Tress (UWR Academy). Together with Dr. Julie Vercelloni (a researcher from Brisbane, Australia), Lorena Bianchi (experienced UWR coach and player), and Wolfgang, we are working on finding a way to use the pete3d data for training and research purposes. It is humbling how knowledgable these people are – together we are collecting and analyzing the players’ data, and trying to use it for training and research purpose. You can check our video for more info.
I was surprised to see how well informed about pete3d the players taking part in the 11th CMAS Underwater Rugby World Championships in Graz were. Since I was a volunteer during the event, I had some free time to talk to various players and coaches.
Besides, another interesting idea that I have heard several times is: Have the data shown during the live feed of the match (Champions Cup, Euroleague, …). I find this very exciting and will work on this as well. This will expand the spectators’ experience by a big margin.
